Giving New Life to Old Structures

September 14, 2025

Adaptive reuse residential design is the practice of taking an existing building – often one that originally served a different purpose – and thoughtfully transforming it into a home or residential space, rather than tearing it down and rebuilding from scratch. It merges history with modern function, allowing us to preserve a structure’s character while reinventing its purpose for contemporary living. When the opportunity presents itself, it truly offers the best of both worlds.

Across Greater Boston and throughout the Cape, we’re seeing a wave of unused carriage houses, barns, and cottages being given second lives as guest suites, studios, and inviting gathering spaces; adaptive reuse architecture work is on the rise, and that’s a great thing.

Adaptive Reuse Residential Design – New Life to Old Spaces

Adaptive reuse transformations give spaces greater freedom. They can be spaces to express creativity and nurture hobbies. A dormant storage space may become a new spot for family gatherings. A forgotten barn can become a wellness retreat; a detached garage can evolve into an art studio. If there’s an opportunity to breathe new life into structures that might otherwise fade into history, preserving the soul of the original structure, we will embrace it every time.

For our project on Brattle Street in Cambridge, we’re in the process of transforming a historic carriage house into a party barn, retaining its architectural roots/charm while adding a new layer of utility and entertainment space.

With the residence on Melrose in Newton, the team seamlessly integrated the garage into the home’s design, expanding function while maintaining flow.

Slocum Hall Design Group’s Approach to Adaptive Reuse

Slocum’s approach begins with respect for what exists as we analyze the building’s condition and character. We reconcile all the seen and unseen potential and then layer in homeowners’ needs. Structural reinforcement, insulation upgrades, and energy-efficient systems make these old spaces livable for decades to come. The goal is to give the past renewed relevance.

As architects in Boston, these types of home renovations/conversions are among our proudest efforts because they’re where preservation meets reinvention, and every design honors both the past and the future. From detailing to careful proportioning and sustainable design choices, we give old structures new meaning. We want to ensure these homes remain functional, beautiful, and relevant for generations to come.
