Residence on Melrose Newton

Home Renovation & Addition

This 1860’s farmhouse in Newton was purchased by Slocum Hall Design Group’s Principal, David Boronkay. Originally, the property consisted of two structures, the 1,800 square-foot main home, and a freestanding barn with a garage and screen porch. The home was completely gutted, with only the exterior shell remaining. The goal was to completely modernize this home; reimagining the layout, and connecting the two original structures with a modern addition.

The hub of the home consists of a large open living area, with four distinct spaces; the living room, dining room, kitchen, and entry foyer which interconnect to provide a generous space for entertaining and comfortable living. The home office and family room create destination spaces without detracting from the open plan.

Connecting the front and rear structures created a much-needed connection between the main house and the extensive property. A view axis is established from the entry foyer, through the living area, the mudroom and family room, pulling the exterior elements into the design. The family room and the surrounding patio spaces feature the same stone flooring, which further enforces the marriage of the indoor and outdoor spaces. Other unique design details include the banded millwork detail on the stairs, which is replicated at the fireplace.

The second floor of the addition includes a primary suite with a sizable closet, an en-suite bathroom, and a private outdoor space.
