Behind the Build: Transforming a Spec Home into a Personalized Coastal Retreat
June 29, 2026Not every dream home begins with a custom blueprint. Sometimes, it begins with a house that has great bones but lacks personality.
That was the case for this new construction home in Mashpee. Originally built as a spec home, it offered a strong foundation but didn’t reflect the way its new owners wanted to live. They envisioned something warmer, more personal, and thoughtfully tailored to their family’s lifestyle.
Rather than starting from scratch, our role was to transform a builder-grade home into one that felt distinctly their own.

Inspired by the relaxed sophistication of Northern California, the design embraces a quiet coastal aesthetic that feels timeless rather than themed. Every decision was made to create a home that is calm, welcoming, and layered with custom architectural details.
The kitchen became the centerpiece of the transformation.
Designed around the homeowner’s passion for baking, the space balances beauty with exceptional functionality. A wall of custom cabinetry creates a clean, seamless backdrop, while a fully paneled refrigerator disappears into the millwork. Opposite, a dedicated baker’s station provides generous workspace and cleverly concealed storage for mixers, baking tools, and everyday essentials. The result is a kitchen that supports daily routines while maintaining a refined, uncluttered appearance.

Throughout the home, custom architectural details elevate what was once a standard spec house. Ceiling beams introduce texture and visual interest to the living room while complementing the custom trim work carried throughout the residence. The staircase was reimagined with thoughtful detailing that strengthens the home’s architectural identity, creating a cohesive design experience from floor to floor.
Upstairs, we added a bright, airy game room that gives the family’s children a dedicated place to gather, play, and grow over the garage. The original plans did not include that living space, but it was important to the homeowners to have that extra space, so we changed the massing to accommodate the new hangout space.
One of the most rewarding aspects of projects like this is proving that customization isn’t limited to new custom construction. With thoughtful design, carefully considered architectural enhancements, and a deep understanding of how a family lives, even a builder-grade home can become something truly exceptional.

For this Mashpee residence, the transformation wasn’t about making dramatic changes; it was about making meaningful ones. The finished home feels effortless, personal, and perfectly suited to its owners, demonstrating that great design is less about where a project begins and more about where thoughtful collaboration can take it.
