Behind the Build: Reimagining a Vermont Mountain Retreat

October 31, 2026

As the weather turns colder and thoughts turn to cozy mountain retreats, we’re reminded of a project in Stowe, Vermont, where Slocum Hall Design Group reimagined an unfinished post-and-beam structure into a welcoming, year-round getaway. Set within a wooded landscape with views of the surrounding Green Mountains, the property had the makings of a distinctive retreat. The challenge was to transform the existing structure into a functional, inviting home that could be enjoyed throughout the year.

The exterior was a natural starting point. Board-and-batten siding brought a fresh architectural character to the front elevation, complemented by cleft stone at the base of the home. A new portico and a decorative grid detail in the front-facing gable added definition and visual interest to the substantial façade, creating a more cohesive presence within the mountain setting.

Inside, the focus shifted to how the home would be experienced day to day. The open post-and-beam construction provided an opportunity to create a sense of volume and connection between spaces, while the interior finishes and furnishings introduced a balance of rustic character and contemporary style. The great room brings the kitchen, dining, and living areas together, encouraging family and friends to gather naturally. Throughout the home, the design allows the warmth and texture of the wood structure to remain a defining feature without overwhelming the interiors.

The result is a retreat designed for more than a weekend escape. By rethinking the layout, updating the finishes, and creating spaces that feel both generous and inviting, Slocum Hall helped turn an unfinished structure into a home suited to year-round use in one of Vermont’s most distinctive mountain destinations.

Projects like this demonstrate how thoughtful design can unlock the potential of an existing property, particularly when the setting is as integral to the experience as the home itself. From the exterior materials to the flow of the interior, every decision contributes to a retreat that feels connected to its surroundings while reflecting the way its owners want to live.

For Slocum Hall Design Group, the West Ridge project in Stowe is an example of how its work can extend beyond Greater Boston and Cape Cod, bringing the same considered approach to residential design in other settings. Whether reimagining an existing structure or shaping a home around a new vision, the goal remains the same: creating spaces that feel personal, purposeful, and built to be enjoyed for years to come.
