All About the Back…of the House
August 30, 2024It’s hard to believe that summer is almost over (say it isn’t so!). Barbecues and outdoor get-togethers are winding down, but it doesn’t mean you can’t continue to enjoy your backyard. We’ve talked a lot about the front of a home; it’s the first thing people see and the cover page of your home’s story. But let’s not overlook what’s happening in the back.
Having a beautiful rear facade might not be visible to the public, but it completes the full picture of your home. Whether it steps out to a plush oasis, blends seamlessly into its natural surroundings, or is an expansive hardscaped patio, the back of your home is just for you—and that’s why it’s the best part!
Residence of Melrose
This 1800s farmhouse in Newton was thoroughly modernized and updated. We clad the rear elevation in matte black nickel-gap siding to further emphasize the transformation from old and tired to modern and fresh. The Family Room, situated behind the sliding glass doors, features the same stone flooring used on the expansive patio surrounding the space. This move helps to further marry the interior and exterior spaces and makes large-scale entertaining a breeze.
Freedom Lakehouse
The main home of this two-structure Lakefront compound was completely rebuilt using the original footprint, reimagining the interior and exterior. All the main spaces in the residence have expansive views of the water through the oversized windows. The composition of the windows also makes for a beautiful rear elevation, as viewed from the lake.
Residence in Brookline
Creating functional outdoor space can be challenging on smaller lots, like in this recently completed project in Brookline. In conjunction with the Family Room and Mudroom additions, the owners desired a covered space to enjoy outdoor dining and a shady spot to relax. A bluestone grilling patio was located adjacent to the covered porch. To further enjoy their outdoor space, we refurbished an already existing trellised sitting area, which serves as a charming vignette within the landscape.
