Reworking Entry Sequences for Homes Across Greater Boston
March 22, 2026The way you enter a home shapes everything that follows. In classic, Colonial, or Victorian homes across Greater Boston, entry sequences were designed for a different era and set of needs. Formal front doors were used occasionally, side entrances were used daily, and little connection between the two. That’s not how families operate today.
At Slocum Hall Design Group, we approach home entry design as both a first impression and a daily utility and experience. Most families still want both a formal arrival and an informal one, each serving a distinct purpose.
The front entry establishes architectural presence and sets the tone. At the same time, the mudroom or secondary entrance supports everyday life, but it doesn’t need to be completely at odds with or disconnected from the main entrance. With a broader home renovation strategy, in which circulation paths are reworked and reconsidered, clarity between public and private zones is purposely created.
Home Entry Design
At the Residence in Waban, a modern English Manor-style home, the formal entry maintains the home’s character, offering a composed and welcoming first impression. At the same time, a carefully integrated mudroom connection provides a more functional access point tied directly to the garage and kitchen areas. This layered approach allows practicality when it matters most.

The Balance Between Experience and Functionality
That balance between experience and function is something we incorporate into every renovation project. With our project, the Modern Prairie home in Weston, the entry sequence was designed to unfold gradually, creating a sense of transition from the exterior to the interior. Rather than stepping directly into a central space, the design introduces subtle shifts in scale, light, and material that help guide movement into the home.
Mudroom design is critical; mudrooms are no longer secondary spaces; they are essential to home entry design, helping to manage the realities of daily life. Built-in storage and thoughtful layouts keep these areas functional while still feeling connected to the overall architectural tone.
As home addition architects, we work to expand and reconfigure entry points to better align with how the home is used today, not how it was originally used decades or centuries ago.
With our project, at The Residence on West Newton Hill, we reimagined the relationship between the front entry and the surrounding living spaces, refining circulation to create a more intuitive flow from the moment of arrival. We opened key connections between the entry and adjacent rooms and clarified pathways through the first floor. We aligned sightlines to draw movement naturally through the home. We balanced this openness with a sense of structure, ensuring each space maintained its own identity. The result is an entry sequence that feels both intentional and effortless.
As a Boston architecture firm, we know entry design is an opportunity to bring order and intention to the entire home.
