Our Newton Design Work Across A City of Diverse Homes

November 8, 2025

Newton, MA, is a city of architectural richness. From its historic estates to mid-century gems and everything in between, each neighborhood tells a unique story in wood, brick, and stone; Newton is architecturally eclectic, to put it lightly.

At Slocum Hall Design Group, we’ve had the privilege of designing across this remarkable city, working with architectural styles ranging from classic to contemporary. Below, we explore several examples of our work across Newton, each with its own design challenge and approach. Together, they paint a picture of what it means to be an architect in Newton, MA.

  • Contemporary Corner Lot

This contemporary home reflects Slocum Hall Design Group’s approach to custom residential design. Designed as a home within a traditionally scaled neighborhood, the project balances modern living with contextual sensitivity. Articulated forms and light-filled interior volumes create a symbiosis between the indoor and outdoor spaces of this modern home. Every decision was guided by craft and longevity.

  • A Tudor Reinvented

The residence on Kenrick presented a very different design language. With its steep rooflines, textured masonry, and half-timbered details, this Tudor-style home called for an approach that honors its history while adapting to contemporary function. Through reconfiguration and respect for the home’s character-defining elements, we opened the interiors for modern flow while preserving the charm.

  • Reimagining a Ranch Gem

The Ruane residence in Newton stands as an example of how mid-century ranch homes can be transformed without losing their intrinsic qualities. This project was recognized with a Newton Preservation Award and involved adapting the ranch’s single-story plan into a more engaging, open home. By restructuring living spaces, integrating natural light, and rethinking circulation, we preserved the ranch’s democratic floor plan and enhanced its spatial experience.

  • Victorian Legacy at Scale

This home has a grand Victorian presence. It is rich in detail and history. With the Residence on Sumner in Newton Center, our role was to balance contemporary needs with the home’s significant heritage. We paid meticulous attention to proportion and historic materiality. We preserved the home’s grandeur while ensuring its long-term use and comfort.

  • Strategic Configuration for Contemporary Use

The Residence in Newtonville challenged us to rethink traditional room adjacencies in light of how today’s families live, work, and gather. By expanding and redefining circulation and spatial relationships, we emphasized daylight, connectivity, and openness without losing the home’s original identity.

Newton, MA, Architects At Work

What unifies these diverse Newton projects isn’t a single style, but rather a consistent design approach: one that respects context and then thoughtfully reimagines each home’s potential. Whether it’s injecting light into a Tudor’s interior or expanding a ranch’s footprint for modern living, our work always starts with understanding 1) homeowners’ needs/desires and 2) the architectural character/spirit. That’s the essence of our work as Newton, MA, architects.

If you’re considering a renovation, addition, or comprehensive redesign in Newton, we’d welcome the opportunity to help shape your next chapter.
