Residence on Sumner Newton Center, MA
Like many homes of its vintage, this beautiful Newton Center Victorian, sitting prominently on a corner lot, lacked the comforts and conveniences of a twenty-first century residence. We designed an addition to accommodate an enlarged Kitchen and Family Room on the main floor, an additional family Bedroom suite on the second floor, and finished above-ground space on the lower level.
Taking advantage of the large, unique front porch and gazebo that wraps the two street elevations, we inserted our addition so that it creates a backdrop for the gazebo from the home’s main front view. The exterior design takes its cues from the architecture of the original house; the shingle and trim details seamlessly blend the new and the old in an organic way.
The original interior Victorian details, including fireplace mantels, railings and moldings, were preserved and reused in the original rooms of the house. These design elements were replicated in the new addition, helping blur the lines of period details and twenty first century living.
